Inheritance of Days to Bolting in Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.)

Abstract
A cultivar, Merit(P©ü) and a genetic line GL5 (P©û) were crossed to determine the number of effective factor pairs controlling days to bolting. It was found by applying the partitioning method of genetic analysis that the two parents were differentiated by two effective factor pairs. The data indicated the existence of partial phenotypic dominance for earlier bolting (P©û) over later one (P©ü). The genotypes of P©û and P©ü were symbolized as AABB and aabb respectively. In studying factor interaction it was found that dominant allele exhibited a higher degree of partial dominance over its recessive allele in all the genotypes, except double heterozygotic pair (AaBb). In substitution of a for A, the different genotypes did not have the same effect upon days to bolting as did the substitution of b for B in the corresponding genotypes. The effect on days to bolting of (A-a) factor pair was approximately three times of the (B-b) factor pair. The degree of dominance with regard to both A and a; and B and b was dependent upon the genetic milieu.
